A long called for clear out has taken place this month. 25 yrs worth of sketch books and paintings have been trawler through, unstuck, sorted, binned, photographed or saved for posterity or reuse.

I knew the slightly mouldering piles would contain the quite good, the utter rubbish and the dominant mediocres, but I wasn’t prepared for being transplanted back in time to confront dead family and pets, old homes and haunts and inconsequential days out. Sketches that stood out were a back garden with a washing line complete with clothes I could remember us wearing, a summer’s day in Chapelfield Gardens with my ‘A’ level friends, a light line drawing of someone at a sink washing brushes at City College and a futuristic colour sketch of my goldfish wending it’s way across the tank. It was like putting on an old pair of eyes and I realised how much blessed time I seemed to have compared to now and how lazy I’d been!

The scariest finds however were GCSE coursework. For some reason I’d taken the sketches from my first life classes and stuck on heads cut out from magazines. These included Leslie Grantham and Terry Venebles. These were too disturbing to save or photograph.

Anyway, this is just a preamble to posting loads more old pictures! I now have some space to paint at home, but still waiting for the time. I am going to a workshop again next Sunday, but that may well be it till the end of the cricket season.

The following two are from 1989. I know that because it was written on the back!
