Luncheon of the Boating Party, 1881. By Pierre-Auguste Renoir.

The Boating Party is a series of Q&As with writers, artists, photographers, filmmakers, musicians, sculptors, illustrators, designers and the like.

In times of economic hardship, the Arts are usually the first things to be axed. But, in my view, the Arts are one of the most important aspects of our civilisation.

Without the arts, we wouldn’t have language or the written word. Without the arts, we have no culture. Without culture, we have no society. Without society, we have no civilisation. And without civilisation, we have anarchy.

Which, in itself, is paradoxical, because so many artists view themselves as rebels to society. To me, artists aren’t rebels, they are pioneers.

Perhaps, most importantly; without the Arts, where is the creativity that will solve the world’s problems going to come from? Including economic and scientific ones?

In this Q&A, I am delighted…

Looking Out

November 7, 2013

Love all of Lovinchelle’s photos and this last one really caught my attention. What an eye! I love the colours and the horizontal and vertical stripes and lines – just what I was looking for to have a go at (see next post). Thank you Lovinchelle – much appreciated!

After going to see an exhibition at half term, I came home wanting to try my own hand at a George Bellowsesque cityscape. In my inbox I found some NYC photos from Andrew Reid Wildman … perfect. See what I came up with in he next post. Building lovers amongst you will spend far too many hours browsing Andrew’s brilliant blog.

Jean Desjardins – the only e-book I’ve ever bothered to purchase and read and I even wrote my first review! Find it on Amazon and check out the blog at http://www.jeandesjardins.wordpress.com

Chicago

June 14, 2012

See above where I had a go at this.

kestrelart

These sketches were done in the two hour class last night.  They are still drying – I took these shots on my phone.

The constraints put on us were to use just black and white, avoiding half tones.  I built in heavy charcoal and then put in white gouache and cheap acrylic ink that had settled like swamp mud at the bottom of the jug.

At this stage, I am just exploring shapes and tones, contrasting painted white, white pixellated with carbon, the virgin white of the untouched paper and the bone white scars left by shredding the surface.

I used a photograph as a reference.  I think I was looking west up East Wacker Street.

I’m back in Chicago in a few weeks.  I’ll bring charcoal and brush.
