This one dates from some time ago; when I was 17 and doing my A levels at Norwich City College. Now it wasn’t the first time I’d drawn from a live model (I’d turned up at Norwich Art School for evening life drawing classes when still at secondary school, without knowing what ‘life’ drawing was), but this was one of my first goes with paint. I think the way I’ve centred the body on the paper and the careful attention to colour shows what the teenage me was interested in. I can remember meeting my non A level art friend at dinner time on the first day of our much anticipated life workshop. She asked “what’s it like?”. Obviously I had to answer “4 foot long and wrapped around his neck”. I think it must have been at this time I decided if I’ve got limited time and a whole man to draw, I’d leave off the head.
