A nice set. I like the empty space to the left of the houses, the pink trees next to the cutting tool and horizontal stripes of foreground beneath the slanting rain, as from a railway window.

    • Thank you. What I’d really like to do is capture the drear of the wet and cloudy, dull-light days we have whilst producing something people would like to look at. I don’t know if it’s colour, tone, space, flat, shape that’s needed or something else I haven’t thought of yet. This summer was such a shock to the system.

Stunning work. Luscious colors. 2, 3, and 5 leap at me each for slightly different reasons, but can’t say enough about the entire sequence.

    • I’m glad you like 2. I’m drawn again and again to the plain scene on a grey day and then wonder if they’re a hopeless contradictory cause. I also wonder why I seem incapable of planning with any focus, but churn out one after another of various scenes. I spoke to a friend about a workshop she’d been to where they encouraged them to just ‘have a go’, ‘jump straight in’. She said it was very strange (but good) as she had always planned everything else carefully. I thought, my god, I’ve never planned anything in my life!

I’ve looked again at 2, your “plain scene on a grey day.” It’s a superb monosyllabic description. The picture helps me reflect on how much mastery or discipline or something is behind understatement and restraint. What you call churning without planning I perceive as productivity with openness and daring and skill. Not to fawn, but I admire what you do, which makes me want to take pains to express why. I’m taking sketch materials to Spain under your influence! May I invoke Bobby Burns here: “The best laid plans of mice and men go aft aglee.” Is that anywhere near correct? It’s from memory. And I assume the last part means “oft awry” or the like?

    • You’re making me blush. I will just say thank you. My mum was a devotee of Rabbie Burns and would often quote him at me. I can’t say I listened, but that one seems apt. I won’t give up on the grey days yet
