Bookcase

October 5, 2016

In an attempt to be more imaginative and inspired, I’ve tried to produce pictures from books I’ve been reading. The first was here and was a map from Thoreau’s The Maine Woods. The female figures are from Will Self’s How the Dead Live and the birds from a combination of Daphne du Maurier’s The Birds and Kate Mosse’s The Taxidermist’s Daughter.

    I like the birds especially

    • It’s not quite working and I don’t think it will! I tried another one from ‘100 years of solitude’, but I just couldn’t create a figure from memory – they were just stick men. For the birds I had to resort to Google images. I have got lots of life drawing under my belt, so I was OK for the female figures which aren’t human anyway. I think the answer is lots more observational drawing and come back to this in 100 yrs time!

    Hi OA
I don’t think you’ve done much drawing birds from life, so your imaginary birds would be unlike real birds without images to borrow from. But even without observational back up your imaginary birds might instead express your feelings about birds rather than even attempt to be representative.
But you’re right, we all need a grounding of diverse observational drawing and the freedom of imaginary expression.

  5. I love what you did with your people’s
    Simply beautiful
    As always Sheldon
