These are wonderfully free sketches – so little saying so much. 🙂

    • Most of these were quickly done on bench breaks on a coastal walk. I was surprised how much a struggled to get the scale even half way right. Very frustrating when i wanted to concentrate on whatever had caught my eye in a scene!

  2. I like the top sketch which develops from a few line and increases in complexity as it goes up.

    These lines are wonderful! (K)

    • Thanks K. I’m getting quite into quick sketching, not something I’ve done much of outdoors until the last year – ish. I went to a workshop yesterday which encouraged differnt marks for different materials. I’m pleased looking back at these that a do sometimes do it naturally.

  4. A great collection of sketches, always handy to have as reference for future works 🙂

  5. I really like these – I find scale when I start a sketch outside a challenge too!

    • Thank you Vicki. Yes i found it a bit daunting and had most success by focussing in on small areas rather than going for the grand vistas. I think my trees are hopelessly the wrong size on the second one!

  6. The struggle for scale is on my mind as well, however as we can only see your sketches it becomes difficult to know what the original was like. So in one sense the problem retreats for the viewer. I love the liveliness of your lines so as a set of sketches away from the source material I’d be pretty happy with these.

    • You are right, but for me it’s inescapable, like grit in the eye! That’s why my comments always sound despondent. But i will be positive; i do like the rocks and i have used a variety of marks. Thank you for the encouragement.

You went to the coast yesterday? These are great images, so quick and bold. KA

    • No these are from the easter hols, i’m behind in my posts. Thinking about what oliver said about making a variety of marks, i think i did this to some extent with these. Must be something about moving indoors that made me sketch differently. How bizarre.
